Remember the actress who played the captain of the Women’s Hockey team in Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De! India? We are talking about Vidya Malvade. Although she had appeared in movies before, Chak De! India became her breakthrough film. Did you know she entered the film industry after her husband’s death, two decades ago? Vidya Malvade had studied law and started her career as an air hostess. It was during her time as an air hostess that she met Captain Arvind Singh Bagga, a pilot with Alliance Air. They got married in 1997, but her world turned upside down when her husband passed away in 2000, when his plane crashed in Patna. Vidya was only 27 years old at that time.
Vidya revealed in an interview with Siddharth Kannan that she was in Germany when she heard about her husband’s death. She said that she was so shattered that she contemplated ending her life. She even bought a few sleeping pills from the local chemist.

She came home and was about to take them when her father came and talked her out of it. Vidya then gave up the idea of taking her life and decided to live on. She was going through bad times, but she managed to ease her suffering through meditation and yoga. She left her job as an air-hostess after her husband’s death. After that she entered the film industry through some modelling assignments. Vidya Malvade later got married again in 2009 to Sanjay Dayma, the director of the film Ramji Londonwaley.
