American political scientist John J. Mearsheimer on Tuesday described India as an “aspiring great power” that is growing strength to strength in the geopolitical rivalry involving the United States, China, and Russia. Speaking during a session at CNN News18’s Rising Bharat Summit 2024 in New Delhi, Mearsheimer said that the United States was the most powerful country on the planet during the unipolar phase, which started with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and lasted roughly till the mid-2010s.
Arguing from a realist perspective, he said the world today was a multipolar one where great powers are vying for dominance. “By 2017, Vladimir Putin had rescued Russia from the dead and Russia was back as the great power — and China (too) because of all of the economic growth that had taken place, during the 1990s and the first 17 years of the 21st century,” said Mearsheimer.

For Union Minister Smriti Irani, ‘shakti’ means ‘Durga and desh’, while ‘Modi’ means ‘shakti ke upasak’. The BJP leader and Amethi MP sportingly took part in a rapid fire round of word association towards the end of a session at the CNN-News18 Rising Bharat Summit on Tuesday.
For the word ‘Rahul’ she responded with ‘maryada-heen’, while for ‘370’ she replied with ‘400 paar’, a reference to the BJP’s target of 400-plus seats in the Lok Sabha elections this time. Asked what words or phrases she would associate with ‘Smriti’, the minister promptly responded with ‘maa’.

CNN News18 kicked off the Rising Bharat Summit 2024 on Tuesday, March 19, and one of our first guests was Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The political leader, who is currently the Minister for Road Transport & Highways in the Government of India, spoke about the development in India, the upcoming elections and more. However, he surprised everyone by talking about Amitabh Bachchan.
During the chat with the host, Amish Devgan, Gadkari was shown a series of photos of Bollywood stars. These included Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Vikrant Massey, Alia Bhatt, Kiara Advani and Taapsee Pannu. The host asked him to pick his favourite star from the actors and actresses. Although he said he liked the work of everyone shown, Amitabh Bachchan would always be his favourite actor.
India is the world’s only post-colonial, highly traditional country that has cracked the code on how to run a liberal democracy, Salvatore Babones, American sociologist and Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, said on Tuesday at CNN-News18’s Rising Bharat Summit.
“India has a democracy, a liberal democracy, a robust liberal democracy… India’s critics love to say that India is not a liberal democracy. India’s democratic institutions are modelled after institutions in North America, Western Europe and Australasia. India’s institutions would not be out of place in any of those regions of the world. India is, in effect, the world’s only post-colonial, highly traditional country that has cracked the code about how to run a liberal democracy,” Babones said.
Former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Erik Solheim, on Tuesday, drew attention to the pressing need for equitable solutions to climate change, emphasising that India and other countries in the Global South have far lower per capita emissions than those in the Global North.
Speaking during a panel discussion at the Rising Bharat Summit here, Solheim said no one should blame India or the Global South for climate change. “The emissions of the United States of America up to this point are 25 times Indian emissions per capita. So stop blaming the global south. By the way, American emissions are also eight times Chinese emissions per capita,” Solheim said while responding to a question on the global divide over climate policies.

“I assure you,” Union Minister Smriti Irani said, adding that, “NDA is crossing 400, just as PM Modi said.”
Union Minister Smriti Irani said that the Gandhi family has only looted the nation. She said that she is glad to have been the one to “defeat” the family in Amethi.
“When Rahul Gandhi brought his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra to Amethi, nobody attended it, not even the karyakartas,” she said while speaking at the Rising Bharat Summit.
